Arki juoksee ja viikot katoaa huomaamatta. Elämä on täyttä ja hyvää. Kaiken keskellä saa onneksi jotakin valmiiksi asti. Puoli vuotta odotelleet tuftatut seinätekstiilit saivat vihdoin taakseen pahvit ja ripustimet. Nyt puuttuvat enää sopivat ruuvit sängyn yläpuolelta. Eipä uskoisi, että huomenna on jo lokakuu, tänään vielä keräsin kimpun puutarhakukkia.

Life is full, but good. It is unbelievable that tomorrow it's already October, today I was still able to collect a vase full of garden flowers. Finally the punch needled rugs are ready to be hang.

Neulanäpertelyä

Pari päivää on takaraivossa muhinut tarve kirjoa kuva. Mielessä oli erityisesti yksi musta t-paita, mutta en keksinyt keinoa siirtää kuvaa mustalle pohjalle  kotoa löytyvillä välineillä (harkitsin jopa kuivapastelleja), joten elvytykseen pääsi valkoinen toppi. Tarkoituksena oli käyttää kuvaan tikkipistoa, mutta trikoolle ilman kirjontakalvoa tai muuta tukea sekin idea piti vaihtaa krouvimpaan etupistoon. Jos oikein viitseliiäksi ryhtyisi, voisi kaula-aukkoon virkata vihreää reunusta, lisätä tytön ajatuksiksi kukkasia, tai kuvioida tytön paidan, mutta yhtä hyvin tämä toppi voi jäädä tälläiseksi. 

Today I gave a bit of a new life for a summer top of mine. This idea for an embroidery has been brewing in my mind for couple of days. I wanted to use a black t-shirt, but didn't have means to transfer the picture into black surface so I took the white top instead. Now I can think of wearing this top again.

Tuftaten

Viimeaikoina, kerran viikossa olen viettänyt aikaa tuftaten. Päätin pysyä erossa itselleni luontaisimmasta kuviomaailmasta eli lehdistä tai linnuista ja rajoittaa itseni geometriaan. Kolmioita on nyt muutenkin joka paikassa, joten miksei sitten yhdessä seinätekstiilissä. Tai tyynyssä, en näet vielä ole päättänyt kumpaa teen. Aikaa saattaa olla vielä toiseen samanmoiseen, tai sitten siihen lintuun ja lehteen.

Tekniikka on aika yksinkertainen. Neula tekee pienellä avustuksella lankalenkkejä kankaan toiselle puolelle ja pintaa syntyy huomattavasti nopeammin kuin vaikka ryijyompelutekniikalla. Ihan heti en touhuun ihastunut, mutta nyt kun rytmi alkaa olla hyppysissä, on puuha jo hauskaa. Näitä välineitä ei kuitenkaan kotiin ole tulossa, sen verran hintava kapistus tuo neula on, vaikka jämälankojen hukkaamiseen tämä on loistava tekniikka. Kännykkäkamera ei oikein tee oikeutta väreille, mutta ryijytekniikoiden tapaan tässäkin työssä jokainen väri muodostetaan yhdistämällä useampi sävy.

Lately I have been doing some punch needle embroidery once a week. Learning a new method of working with yarn I also challenged my normal visual habits of working with natural themes like leaves and birds. I stricted myself to geometrics and chose some triangulars. Triangulars and chevron patterns are everywhere at the moment so why not in my own wall hanging or pillow. I haven't decided yet, which one I'm doing.

Parsimispuuhia

Kun on käyttänyt useamman viikon yhden sukkaparin tikuttamiseen pienillä puikoilla, on sukkien parsiminen itsestäänselvyys. Aikanaan pappa opetti, kuinka sukat parsitaan. Rintamalla piti miehen osata korjata sukat moneen kertaan ja kestävästi. Tämä pari on joutunut odottamaan parsinneulaa hieman liian pitkään ja korjaamisen mielekkyys oli kyseenalaista. Järkevintä olisi tainnut olla terittää sukka uusiksi. Itselle olisi paritkin sukat keskeneräisinä puikoilla, mutta aina väliin kiilaa muita projekteja. On korjaaminen sentään nopeampaa kuin uusien tekeminen.

 Kuvasta muuten näkyy aika selvästi, miten langan värit ovat haihtuneet käytössä, koska korjauslanka on samaa kuin itse sukka. Vieläkin on täydellinen, kestävä ja ohut sukkalanka hakusessa. (Ei antanut luonto periksi laittaa täysikokoisia kuvia reikäisistä, kulahtaneista sukista.)

Mending a pair of my favorite wool socks the way my grandfather once taught me. This pair needed to wait for fixing a bit too long. 

The picture shows how the colors fade in use, because the mending yarn is the same as the actual sock. Still looking for the perfect, durable sock yarn.

Vähän väkerrettyä

Neuloin vähän, kirjoin vähän.  Lunta satoi paljon, toi mukanaan uuden äänimaiseman, pehmeän lempeän. Väkerrykset olkoot arjen pieniä iloja. Lasinalusten ohje on PurlBeestä. Kirjonnat omasta päästä, suurempi on rintakoru, pienemmän käyttötarkoitus ei ole vielä selvillä. 

I knitted a bit, embroidered a bit. It snowed a lot. The pattern for the coasters is from PurlBee the embroideries freehand work by me.

The bird and the mole/Lintu ja myyrä

These lovelies arrived today. I simply couldn't resist this bird pouch from Handyhandscorner, so now I have a new bird companion. Magda was so kind and enclosed a little mole booklet for my girls. Such a nice surprise.

Nämä kaverukset saapuivat tänään postissa. Tämä lintupussukka tarttui täältä heti mieleeni, joten nyt mukanani kulkee uusi lintunen. Magda lähetti Myyrä-vihkosen yllätykseksi tytöilleni. Iloinen ja mieluisa yllätys se olikin.

Unfinished businesses/ Keskeneräistä

Bad planning and postponing things put together can turn into weekends like this one. No time for simple relaxation like crafting or just being quiet. Instead of that rushing from an errand to another, from an obligation to the next. I'll really need the short fall break which we'll have from Wednesday to Sunday the coming week.

Not only relaxation is on the hold. Usually I try to ignore the fact that I have almost the same amount of unfinished crafts lying around as I have finished projects in use. This might be due to the constant multitasking I'm guilty of - or the fact that there are so many things I would like to make. Here are a couple of examples: The embroidered table runner (started over a year ago) or the basket filled with my hibernating knitting projects (all started this year). Some projects just have the power to get ready, others are the funniest by the beginning. It would save me a lot of money, time and effort to know which kind of a project, I'm planning, while starting a new craft.

Kun suunnittelee työnsä ja vapaaehtoiset menonsa huonosti ja yhdistää sen tapaan tehdä kaikki viimetingassa on seurauksena tämän viikonlopun kaltaisia päiviä. Ei toivoakaan oleskelusta hiljakseen tai käsitöiden kanssa rentoutumisesta, vaan on säntäiltävä päätä pahkaa tehtävästä toiseen ja velvollisuudesta seuraavaan. Ensi viikon syyslomapätkälle alkaa todella olla tarvetta.

Rentoutuminen ei tässä talossa ole ainoa asia, joka aina välillä joutuu odottelemaan aikaansa. Tarkemmin kun katsoo, saattaa huomata tosiasian, jonka yleensä pyrin jättämään huomiotta: minulla on vähintään yhtä paljon keskeneräisiä käsitöitä kuin niitä valmistuneita. Esimerkkeinä tästä taipumuksesta käyvät hyvin vaikka noin puolitoista vuotta sitten aloitettu kirjontatyö, josta piti tulla pöytäliina tai korillinen vaiheessa olevia neulomuksia (kaikki aloitettu tänä vuonna).Toisissa projekteissa vain on tarvittava imu sen loppuunsaattamiseen, kun taas joissakin töissä aloittaminen on se hauskin vaihe. Säästäisi kummasti aikaa, vaivaa ja rahaa, jos jo ryhtyessään tietäisi kummasta on kyse.

Laskiainen

Most of us Finns have been today sledging, playing with the snow and eating whipped cream-filled buns i.e. laskiaispulla, that's at least what we've been up to. I was planning to take the easiest way with my laskiaispulla, and buy some ready-to-bake buns and just do the stuffing with cream, jelly and marzipan by myself. However, I was forced to change my plans as all the shops were out of stock with freezer buns. So, I had to bake my own. Luckilly this time around I'm happy with the results of my kitchen efforts. That's not always the case while baking buns. I often make the mistake of comparing my buns with those of my mum's and mostly I just can't compete with hers.



Tomorrow I'm heading for work. Part of processing that fact, was trying to make my teacher's diary to look a bit more alluring. The original design of the book is completely boring.


I sew for it covers out of my favourite print from Marimekko, called Afrikan kuningatar. I put a thin padding into the covers, quilted some pictures of the fabric with a running stitch and added a couple of vintage buttons for eyes. Now I can bear to look at this diary and the fabric is so bright and vivid that I should be able to find my book in any pile of books. I guess, my pupils will immediately notice those staring panther eyes. Maybe I'll tell them that when I'm not looking after them, my panther will...

Avoiding the inevitable

I should be busy making Christmas cards in order to get them posted on time, instead I'm posting about things I've been doing instead. To be exact I haven't finished or even started one single Christmas card. So if you have used to get a card from us this might be the first year when it doesn't happen.

Because I'm pretty sure Leevi doesn't read my blog, I can show you the tote I sew for him. I'm hoping to make a couple more of these for other kids on my list. Elsi's tote is the original, which I made last year. Elsi's tote has a lining, but the other one doesn't. The flax I used, is sturdy enough without lining and naturally easier to sew without.



The tote was on the list for Christmas, so that doesn't count as avoiding card making. But the apron I sew for Elsi was just for the fun of making it. I had an opportunity to use my bias tape maker for the first time and it was sooooo good and practical. So definitely a good buy. I hand-stitched the reindeer on the front to brighten my rather dark choice of fabrics. This fabric is the same flax as in the tote above. It's so nice fabric to work with that I decided to try it on children's clothing. Let's see how it will survive the stains and strains of every-day life with a three-year-old.
